After studying acting and theatre direction at Otago University, Jane founded Castaway Casting in 1989. It was Christchurch’s first independent casting service at a time when the international film industry was just starting to sit up and take notice of the South Island as a location. As such business was brisk and she had the opportunity to work with some top local and international directors.
In 1995 Jane and then husband Peter Bannan moved to Auckland and founded Bannan Films – Peter directing and Jane producing. Over the ensuing twelve years she produced over a hundred tv commercials and photographic campaigns, shooting all over New Zealand, in Australia and throughout Asia. She has also line-produced numerous stills and tv commercials for international production companies shooting in New Zealand.
Jane returned to Christchurch in 2003 and has a passion for the Canterbury region.
Art Department Assistant
We call Josephine our Splendid all-rounder – there’s not much she can’t do when she puts her mind to it. Apiarist, ceramicist, dumpling-maker extraordinaire, photographer, location scout, production coordinator, art department assistant, props buyer, stylist. Basically she’s the girl you want on your team. And she is. Aren’t we lucky!
Josephine’s recent film and television credits include; production coordination, casting and locations on several documentary projects with local company Belmont Productions, casting and talent wrangling for the ICC Cricket World Cup opening ceremony and art department assistant for Terence Davies feature film Sunset Song (shot here in Canterbury). She has also worked as production assistant on numerous commercials for local and visiting production companies.
Sal cut her teeth in the film industry working with Jane and Peter at Bannan Films in the nineties. As fulltime production manager for 5 years she ‘made shoot happen’ with her unique blend of humour, persuasion and organisational skills (and a big voice, when necessary).
There’s no doubt about it, Sal is a people person – she gets on with anyone, anywhere…. and that’s really handy if you’re in the Canterbury foothills and need a farmer and 300 sheep to come down the road with an hour’s notice.
Sal is also our resident wine buff (which is a great asset for any production team worth their salt wouldn’t you say?).
Josie is another Bannan Films recruit, coming on board as a fulltime production assistant when Jane and Peter shifted their business back to Christchurch in 2003. She has subsequently forged a successful freelance career as a production assistant, location scout, casting assistant and assistant director for commercials and television dramas.
Josie is another one of those clever, switched on folk who can tackle pretty much any challenge with a can-do attitude and a smile. She has been known to make pigs fly (ask her about that) and has spent the past four years working on her most challenging project to date – two gorgeous babies.
Oscar is our gen Y ring-in. Though technically still a fulltime student, we exploit his ‘digital native’ status without conscience when it comes to editing casting videos and all that tricky stuff. Don’t you worry though, he gets paid handsomely in hot meals and breakfasts in bed.
